Music Monday - Boboso / Life's a Gas

(click to download)
Have you ever gone to see Gnarboots perform and thought, "I really wish Gnarboots was just the rapping part, without the other two guys sweating all over me and screaming"? Well, now you can experience just that! Here is Bob Vielma's solo rap album, featuring all of your favorite songs about San Jose's most infamous Mexican, Ya Boy Boboso.

Minibosses - Get in the Minivan 2012

Nintendo rockers the Minibosses will be joined by Gnarboots (the band I'm in) for five shows in four days in October. More like ROCKtober, amirite? They're also flying us out to Arizona to play their 250th show. Should be a real good time. Big thanks to Eric Fanali for hooking us up with these guys.

I'm looking into having screenprints made of this poster to sell at the shows. I'm only going to print up about 50. What do you think, is that enough?

Music Monday - Mike Huguenor / Bardamu

(click to download)
Mike is in Shinobu, Hard Girls and Classics of Love. Between those three bands, I guess this batch of songs couldn't find a home. I thought this would be the usual singer/songwriter acoustic guitar fare, and I couldn't be happier to be wrong about that. Great jams from a great dude.

Punk Isn't Dead, It's Extinct: the 924 Gilman Card

Hey! If you're a card-carrying punker in the year 2012, there's a good chance you'll have one of these in your wallet. I created the art (or rather, recycled it from a flyer I made for the most recent show that Gnarboots played) for the new 924 Gilman card, though my signature isn't on it because "No Masters, No Artists"... right?
My prize for my art being chosen is one million punk points, which are all automatically voided by being over 30.
I hope you'll go see a show soon and put some of my art in your pocket!

SF Zine Fest 2012 - Sept 1 + 2

(click to read)
I was interviewed by the nice folks running the SF Zine Festival this year, you can read it by clicking on the picture above. I'll be there selling my art and checking out what everyone else has been up to over the last year.

Here's a couple of my favorite vendors at the SF Zine Fest from years past:

  • Josh Ellingson - Rad illustrator and all-around great guy.
  • Jen Oaks - Another illustrator, she had a really cool set of Twin Peaks buttons for sale.
  • Karl Dotter - He likes toast. I mean, he really likes toast.
  • Gnartoons - I sat next to James last year. His comics are super weird.
  • Deth P Sun - His art is killer.

Destroy Nate Allen - Bertie Saves Cat

Destroy Nate Allen gave me the opportunity to redo the Robot Saves Kitten shirt I did for them a while ago. This has Bertie from the flyer series I did, and a chubby little cat rather than kittens.

Destroy Nate Allen - With Our Powers Combined Shirt

Here's a shirt design based on the layout of the new album. I think the halftone comic book design transfers nicely to a black & white shirt design. This is one of the only t-shirt designs I've done recently that I didn't hide my signature in, mainly because I thought it would distract from the design.

6.19.2012

Destroy Nate Allen - Vegetables Shirt

Nate and Tessa have this song about needing to eat more vegetables, and not drinking so much coffee. This is not a song topic that I agree with (sure, eat more vegetables, but drink a butt-load of coffee too. mmmm, a butt loaded with coffee...) but it was still a fun illustration to do.
I basically ripped off the cover of Fantastic Four #1 for this. It ties in nicely with the comic book theme I gave the layout of their new record.

Music Monday - Destroy Nate Allen featuring Gnarboots / With Our Powers Combined

(Click to Download)
In addition to playing guitar and contributing some group vocals to this recording, I also designed the art for the CD.

I've also created a few new t-shirt designs for them that you can pick up on their upcoming tour, and I'll be posting those over the next few days.

I'm also painting some robots as perks from their kickstarter campaign, I'll be posting those as soon as I paint them.

Basically, Destroy Nate Allen employ me to do a lot of art! Thanks Destroy Nate Allen!

Music Monday - Wild Moth / s/t

(click to download)
These guys put out a recording a while back that sounded like ca-ca. You could hear that they had good songs, but the recording sounded real bad. I was really happy to see they put out a proper recording. Now I just need to go check them out live.

Flyer - 05.06.2012

I realized that I forgot to post this one. WHOOPS! Here's what happened between Bertie falling into the valley of dead robots, and meeting his new little pal.

5.30.2012

Flyer - 06.02.2012

This Saturday I will be in Santa Cruz opening for the Minibosses. If you are unfamiliar, they are four piece rock band who perform covers of 8-bit Nintendo songs. Not only am I stoked to get to play this weekend, I'm pretty stoked to see these guys play live.
If you're interested in attending, you can pick up a cheap $5 advance ticket here.

Music Monday - Dad Punchers / Bedroom Demos

(click to download)
This was my favorite discovery off of the Kali Sound Mixtape I posted last week. Some catchy lo-fi jams recorded in a bedroom. Band name is pretty hilarious too, especially to me. No idea who the person responsible for these is, but they write good songs.

5.22.2012

Flyer - 06.16.2012

Here's the final flyer in the series of flyers I illustrated for Destroy Nate Allen. They all tie together, and I'll probably be posting them again shortly without all of the text. It was a fun experiment!

Music Monday - Kali Sound / Kali Mixtape Volume 1

Here's a collection of songs from a bunch of bands I like. If you like loud guitars and dudes yelling their heads off, check this out.

I Drew This - Beach Bummed

Elijah Stoll plays drums in a lot of bands. He had a new band called Beach Bummed, but they've already broken up. I told him I would draw something for them a while ago, and here it is. Too bad it's not going to get used for anything now.
It's based on this illustration by Jim Phillips. I really like Jim Phillips. Hopefully I will get to hang out with him someday.

Flyer - 05.18.2012

I made this flyer for the show I am playing on Friday at 924 Gilman. I've been really busy with a couple of projects (and raising my son) so it was nice to blow off some artistic steam and draw something for myself.

Want to get into the show for free? Color this illustration and email it to me. Best one (or first one, or only one) gets into the show for free!

I Drew This: Dan P & The Bricks / Kill Your Television

Dan Potthast and I go way back to when I was in Link 80 and he was in MU330. I actually saw MU330 at Berkeley Square before I was in Link 80, and before Dan was the singer in MU330. So why is the first shirt I'm designing for him?! Shoooots, bruh.

3.15.2012

I Drew This: Bobby Joe Ebola & the Children Macnuggits / Dog Poop

I drew this t-shirt design for Bobby Joe Ebola & The Children Macnuggits a little while back. When I asked Corbett what he wanted me to draw, he said, "Well, we have lots of songs about dogs & poop!"

Music Monday - Filbert / If Time Travel Were Possible

(click to donate)

Stockton is a pretty bleak place.

Aside from Pavement being from there, for years there wasn't much to say about Stockton. More recently, the Plea For Peace center opened there, and I saw Filbert play there. They play lo-fi sweet songs, sad bastard jams that need to be on vinyl. They're raising money to press their new record, and they are a little over halfway. I don't usually post music that can't be downloaded, but I really like this band and I'd like to see them reach their goal. If you like what you hear, please help them out.

Image Comic Expo - Friday

My friend Gil clued me into that Image Comics was putting on a comic convention over in Oakland this weekend a few weeks back. He already had a table, but his partner wasn't coming out Friday. I took the opportunity today to try my hand at hanging out in Artist Alley.

I was woefully unprepared for the convention. First off, I've only ever drawn one comic, and it's completely out of date at this point. I sold all of my paintings at ROCKAGE, and I ran out of business cards at the Alameda Holiday Craft Fair. I keep meaning to order more business cards from MOO.com, but other things keep getting int he way. Plus, I want my next batch to be spectacular. They make a really great product, with a lot of different variations, so making sure I get the right thing is a little daunting.

For the convention, I decided to go lo-fi: I've had these small bristol boards lying around for a while, and I decided I would do quick illustrations on one side. The other side has my contact information. I figured while I might not hand out as many of these as I could with actual business cards, they might be a little more special to the people who take them.

I forgot to take pictures of all of them, but I did remember to take a few:

Unfortunately, I won't have a spot to sell art tomorrow (unless someone doesn't show up, and someone pulls some strings...) but I'll definitely have a table there next year. If I do make it tomorrow, I'll be sure to draw lots and lots of zombies: Image Comics publishes the Walking Dead.

I made some prints out of my Gamechanger images, in hopes that I could sell some at ROCKAGE. I still have a bunch left over, please take them off my hands! Hand numbered and signed, limited to fifteen each!

Gamechanger - Legend of Zelda x Skyrim - $10 (+$3 shipping)

Gamechanger - Super Mario Bros x Portal - $20 (+$3 shipping)

Happy Valentine's Day

This commission was a little weird: I painted this for my ex-girlfriend Liz to give to her husband on Valentine's Day. This might seem real weird from an outside perspective, but it didn't feel weird to paint it. Honestly, I like them both a lot, and I think this turned out really cute, so I hope he liked it. I like doing commissions like this, where I'm not just drawing more robots and dinosaurs.

I've included the original sketch, which I think is a little better. One of these days, I'll be able to capture the initial energy from these sketches in my final paintings.

Cerce has a split coming out soon with Leer, on Phat n' Phunky. Here's the teaser video:

Gamechanger - Super Mario X Portal

Dead Baphomet

I felt like the first Baphomet illustration I did looked too robust, I wanted something that looked deader. So, I redrew it. I wound up using both of the illustrations for this flyer. This is going to be a killer show, if you are in the area you should attend, and not just because I'm playing.

2.07.2012

Arrrr! Pirates!

Here's a close up of the pirates I drew for the pirate map I did a little while back. They were so small on the poster, I thought I would re-post them here. I really like the way the lens on the spy glass came out.

ROCKAGE festival - San Jose

(click to buy tickets)
This coming weekend (11th & 12th) I will be selling art, playing video games and performing with GNARBOOTS at the Rockage festival in San Jose. It's $20 for a two-day pass, there will be a ton of live bands, chip tune artists, and other weirdness.

I created the logo for it.

2.06.2012

Music Monday - Megan & Amelia / Our First (Demo II)(Listen With Headphones)

(click to download)
Real quiet songs. I seem to either like really loud songs, or really quiet songs. or electronic stuff. or ska.

Happy Birthday to Me!

I turn 35 years old today. David Choe is the same age (I dont think he has the same birthday as me...), and he just made $200 million dollars on stock he earned from painting Facebook HQ a few years back. Maybe he will see this and buy me a sandwich, or a skateboard. I decided to do a little drawing for myself this morning while watching my son, so here's a warm-up sketch of Cerebus riding a skateboard!

Your Friday Awesome - Primary 7" now available!

(click to order from Asian Man Records!)
I have a lot of dumb ideas, and lately I've been actually making most of them into reality. I always thought it would be fun to re-interpret the LDS Sunday school songs I grew up singing into punk rock songs. I mean, there's Christian Hardcore, Krishnacore, Taqwacore... why not Mormon Hardcore (or CTR Hardcore, as I like to think of it)? Primary was the name of the Sunday school class the little kids were put into. Singing these songs was my first introduction to music, something that has become a huge part of my life. There's now a 7" available from Asian Man Records of Primary, and I believe some of them are pressed on gold vinyl!

Here's a sample of what it sounds like:
