I drew and colored this while my son was napping! A little rushed, but I wanted to get it up today.

Music Monday - Gnarboots / Cats In Pajamas

Gnarboots (the band I'm in) made a video for our song Cats In Pajamas, with the help of our friends Andrew and Chris at French Press Films. We shot the video in an hour and a half, and I edited it on a demo version of Final Cut Pro while my son napped over Christmas break. It currently has 13,000 views on YouTube, thanks to being posted on Laughing Squid, Mashable and The Huffington Post.

• I created the song in Garageband after hearing it in a dream. 
• It was contributed to the Cat Music for Cat People compilation record, after playing a weird house show for Catfood Chris. I never expected the comp to actually come out, let alone be pressed on vinyl 
• We played an all-Cat In Pajamas set at the Texas Toast House where the song was split into 4 parts, during which we would just dance. The rest of our set was nursery rhymes and slowed down reverbed-out versions of our songs. Also, most of the audience was also wearing pajamas.

I think his scribbles are some of my favorite parts of these.

My son has taken an interest in coloring lately. Also, we bought a new kitchen table from IKEA, so there was a ton of cardboard in the apartment. I thought it would be fun to make a bunch of art with him and give it away for free when I took down the Phthalo Blues art show.

Most of the art was taken during a Kepi/Kevin Seconds/Dr. Frank show. If you wound up taking home a piece of art, send me a picture! I'd love to see where these wound up.

I finally got around to putting together an online store for my art. Please go give it a look and order something for the blank space on your wall. I'll be adding new stuff all the time, figuring out what works and what doesn't, and maybe selling off old band merchandise on here. 

PHTHALO BLUES - ART SHOW

Last Saturday was the reception for the Phthalo Blues art show at 1-2-3-4 GO Records. It was supposed to be on Friday, but it got bumped due to a double booking (there were three bands that had a show booked there for Friday). I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little bummed that it got moved, since Friday was the big First Friday / Art Murmur.  Still, I had a steady stream of people come in, and by the end of the night all but four of the paintings were sold.

My art will be up until Dec 20th, at which time I'll be taking it down and replacing it with a bunch of free art on cardboard! I'll be there to see Reece Noble's band Diehard on the 20th if you want to say hello, or you can try to snag some art when Kepi and Kevin Seconds play there on the 23rd. Anything that doesn't get taken then will probably be thrown in the trash.

Music Monday - The Conceal / Endless River | Stunted Prayer

I downloaded this a long time ago, and never got around to giving it a proper listen until last week. My friend Mike McClatchey is the man behind this band. He played guitar on the ForTheWin record I lent some vocals to, and this album delivers everything I liked about that recording tenfold.

Can't wait to see these guys live.

PHTHALO BLUES - ART SHOW *NEW DATE*

*Due to a double-booking on Friday, the reception for the PHTHALO BLUES art show will be on Saturday at 7PM. I will be selling a bunch of new art for real cheap. I'm planning on selling all of the paintings for $20 the day of the reception.

The prices will be increased if you stop by later in the month.*

 

I'm having an art show in Oakland in a little over a week. All of the pieces have been painted using only phthalo blue and white paint. I'll hopefully have a few interesting surprises in addition to the paintings, it's just a matter of getting everything prepared in time.

Jump on this, cause it's only available for free for about three more day! Driving rock in the vein on Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu and Rocket from the Crypt. Makes sense, since it was recorded by the Swami himself, John Reis.

New Sign! - Rocket Reuse

The city of Alameda decided that sandwich boards couldn't be taking up space on the sidewalks downtown, so my favorite shop Rocket Reuse had to retire the sign I helped make for them. When I found this out, I offered to help redo the sign into a hanging version.


I re-laid out the original art, adjusted the text, and sent it off to the printer. I'm really happy with the result, and so is the shop! I have to say, I love walking under this when I'm out running errands.

New music from ex-members of Dead Ringer and The Pillowfights. This is a great example of a perfect first release for a new band. Here's why:

• Short songs are the way to go. The longest song on here is 2:18!
• Catchy melodies. I was whistling the chorus to "Girlfriend" after one listen. 
• Less than 5 songs, more than 2. Four songs is just enough to leave you wanting more.
• Good recording, no frills. Skylar Suorez recorded this. He rules. 

 Can't wait to see them live.

This will be my third time playing with Peelander Z (Gnarboots played with them twice in one day). I've heard this is Peelander Red's last tour, so I feel like this flyer is appropriate.

GET IN THE MINIVAN mini-tour, come buy some art

As someone who used to tour quite a bit, I don't like to throw the term "tour" around lightly. I feel like if you aren't out on the road for over a month, and you don't leave your state/time zone, it's not a tour. However, six shows in four days with one band from out of state, I can at least call that a mini-tour.

Gnarboots played last weekend with the Minibosses out in Tempe, AZ. It was insane. I have never been so sore, hoarse and sweaty after a show. If that show was any indication of what this mini-tour is going to be like, I'm gonna be wrecked.

I've had some screen printed posters made, and I will be selling them at the upcoming shows. I'll also bring along some original pieces of art to sell!

If you listen to this RIGHT NOW, there's a good chance we will both be listening to this for the first time. So why am I posting this before even listening to the whole thing? I've been listening to the initial Clams Casino mixtape pretty much exclusively whenever I'm out driving.

This has got to be just as good.

Music Monday - Minibosses / Brass

My band Gnarboots played with Minibosses recently in Santa Cruz. We are now best friends with them. While they are a technically superior group of musicians, we have a similar idea about what makes a concert fun, mainly, being weird, staying in the moment, messing with the audience, and playing the same song over and over and over.

We'll be playing five shows with them over a four day stretch: October 18th - 21st. They're also flying us out to Arizona this week to play their 250th show! It is going to get weird up in there. Hopefully Bob makes sure to bring his papers. Y.I.K.E.S!

Minibosses - Get in the Minivan 2012

Nintendo rockers the Minibosses will be joined by Gnarboots (the band I'm in) for five shows in four days in October. More like ROCKtober, amirite? They're also flying us out to Arizona to play their 250th show. Should be a real good time. Big thanks to Eric Fanali for hooking us up with these guys.

I'm looking into having screenprints made of this poster to sell at the shows. I'm only going to print up about 50. What do you think, is that enough?

Mike is in Shinobu, Hard Girls and Classics of Love. Between those three bands, I guess this batch of songs couldn't find a home. I thought this would be the usual singer/songwriter acoustic guitar fare, and I couldn't be happier to be wrong about that. Great jams from a great dude.
